How is Tamil Nadu Electricity Bill Calculated?
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO / TNEB) uses a subsidized telescopic tariff structure under Tariff IA (Domestic). For instance, if a household in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, or Tiruchirappalli consumes 300 units in a month with a 1 kW load:
- First 100 units @ ₹0.00 = ₹0.00 (100% Free Power Subsidy)
- Next 100 units (101 to 200) @ ₹4.50 = ₹450.00
- Remaining 100 units (201 to 300) @ ₹6.00 = ₹600.00
- Total Energy Charges: ₹1,050.00
- Fixed Demand Charges: 1 kW × ₹100 = ₹100.00
- Electricity Duty (5%): (₹1,050 + ₹100) × 5% = ₹57.50
- Estimated Total Monthly Bill: ₹1,207.50 (Approx ₹1,208)
TNEB Bimonthly Billing System Explained
In Tamil Nadu, residential meter reading is performed once every two months (60-day billing cycle). Under this system:
- The government provides 200 free units per bimonthly billing cycle (equal to 100 free units each month).
- If your bimonthly consumption is 400 units, the first 200 units are billed at ₹0, and the remaining 200 units are charged according to the slab rates.
- This online calculator translates the official bimonthly structure into standard monthly figures so you can budget your monthly household expenses accurately.
